Dr. Ruby Payne's Bridges Out of Poverty framework teaches community members to understand the variety of economic situations found in their area. The program Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By-World is designed to build financial, emotional, mental or social resources for those who desire to work towards changing their current situation.

Maquoketa will be presenting Payne's Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By-World program in January 2020, running through the end of March, and followed by a graduation celebration the first week of April. The program will be held Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. There will be a meal provided from 5:30- 6:00 with childcare available at no charge.

Getting Ahead helps attendees to understand the hidden rules of class and how perspectives may vary according to the economic class in which they live. The process includes creating mental models of “life as we know it now,” which leads to building resources, goal-setting, and planning for “life as we would like to see it.”

The Getting Ahead program helps people interact more effectively and become more productive community members. The group investigates changes people in our community, such as social service agencies, can make to help the community as a whole become more effective and succeed together.
