We're happy to announce concurrent showings of Chuck's illustrations for his children's book, The Storytelling Tree and Rose's installation, Portrait of Maquoketa.

October 19, 2019 – February 2, 2020 at the Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa

Opening reception: October 24, with happy hour starting at 4:30pm. Gallery talk: 6:30pm.
37 finely detailed pencil drawings tell the story of a girl and her father who live in a bookstore. Every evening, her father goes to the attic of the bookstore to write her a new story. One night she waits and waits and waits. Finally, she goes to look for him. Her search leads her to a light-filled crawlspace. Following this light around the crawlspace, she enters the Storytelling Tree.

Portrait of Maquoketa is again on view at the Figge

In a Main Street Maquoketa, Iowa storefront, Rose Frantzen painted portraits from life of anyone in her hometown that wished to pose for her. Rose painted 180 12x12” oil portraits, which were all shown at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Portrait of Maquoketa is now a dual-sided installation that includes a 315 square foot landscape view of Maquoketa painted on 34 suspended panels arranged in such a way that when a visitor sits at one end of the installation, all of the panels coalesce into a unified view of Maquoketa. The other side of these panels holds the portraits.

Portrait of Maquoketa is now in the permanent collection of The Figge Art Museum, and it is alternately shown and traveled.
